Requirements For Cold Storage September1 | FW Logistics

West Coast living has its downfalls, especially when you’re storing food in a refrigerated warehouse. There are a lot of obstacles that businesses in California have to overcome due to a 12-month summer, and storing perishable food is one of them.

Temperature Controlled Warehouse: A Key Factor in Food Storage

A reliable temperature controlled warehouse is essential when you’re in the food service industry. Millions of people around the world indulge in taking themselves and their families out to restaurants where they can wine, dine, and enjoy quality food.

A lot of factors can play a part in poor-quality food, but an inaccurately temperature controlled warehouse shouldn’t be the demise of your perishable goods.

Types of Cold Storage Warehouses

There are several storage solutions that can keep your refrigerated goods at their best, including:

  • Refrigerated containers
  • Blast freezers and chillers
  • Cold rooms
  • Pharmaceutical-grade storage
  • Dedicated cold storage facilities

More often than not, a refrigerated warehouse is crucial for keeping food and beverages at peak quality. There are many challenges when storing cold food in a temperature controlled warehouse, and many factors can play a part in getting your refrigerated warehouse temperature just right. In fact, even the seasonal temperature outside can affect what’s happening to the food inside your temperature controlled warehouse. And for states with mostly warm climates all year round, like California, maintaining temperature controlled storage is a full-time job.

Cold Storage Warehouse Requirements

No matter where the location, once you’ve found a refrigerated warehouse that has the capability to keep your products at an optimal temperature, you need to make sure that the storage space has passed all relevant inspections and ensure it’s up to industry-wide standards.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that all facilities in the industry meet certain criteria:

  • All food manufacturing, including packaging and storage, shall be conducted under such conditions and controls as are necessary to minimize the potential for the growth of microorganisms, or for the contamination of food. One way to comply with this requirement is careful monitoring of physical factors such as time, temperature, humidity, aw, pH, pressure, flow rate, and manufacturing operations such as freezing, dehydration, heat processing, acidification, and refrigeration to ensure that mechanical breakdowns, time delays, temperature fluctuations, and other factors do not contribute to the decomposition or contamination of food.
  • Equipment, containers, and utensils used to convey, hold, or store raw materials, work-in-process, rework, or food shall be constructed, handled, and maintained during manufacturing or storage in a manner that protects against contamination.

FW Logistics follows all FDA guidelines related to cold storage warehouse requirements by monitoring the temperature and humidity of every refrigerated warehouse we manage.

We also hold several food-grade warehousing certifications that were presented to us for providing our clients with the best food grade storage solutions. Our warehouses are certified for storage of food, ingredients, containers, and beverages. We frequently go through independent AIB inspections to uphold our standards and stay up to date on industry trends.
